North Carolina Congressional Election 2012 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
I believe that women need full access to contraception.
Yes Do you support a timetable for withdrawal from Afghanistan?
Unknown Position Do you support United States' combat operations in Afghanistan?
We must be very careful about starting military action, be very clear about our objectives, and have an exit strategy from the beginning.

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing the federal budget. In order to balance the budget,

Yes do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes do you support reducing Medicaid spending?
Yes do you support reducing Medicare spending?
Is balancing the budget a legislative priority?
Unknown Position do you support reducing defense spending?
We should consider closing bases outside of the US. Do we need to spend as much as the rest of the world combined on the military? We need to be strategic on how we allocate this money. We must reign in medical costs by using data to drive decision making. We should encourage the use of generics, of watchful waiting when supported by evidence and in creating systems that do not duplicate services. That said, I believe all Americans have the right to basic, decent healthcare. Balancing the budget should only be a priority if done without cutting essential services.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
The impact of money in campaigns cannot be over-stated. We the people, should mean people, and not just special interests. The goal of corporations is to make money, an interest that is by definition self-serving. The goal of government should be the common good which is by definition broad and other interested.
No Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
There is too much evidence that mistakes are made in trials to be certain that no innocent person is not executed. There is no evidence that capital punishment works as a deterrent. If we believe that killing others is wrong then we should not do it.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
Yes Do you support spending on infrastructure projects for the purpose of job creation?
Yes Do you support the temporary extension of unemployment benefits?
Do you support the 2010 temporary extension of tax relief?
I believe the government should be the employer of last choice during times of economic crisis. The WPA turned our economy around at a critical time, provided needed jobs, created infrastructure that we all continue to benefit from, and taught workers needed skills that served them the rest of their lives.
Yes Do you support requiring states to implement education reforms in order to be eligible for competitive federal grants?
We as a nation have a vital interest in the education of our children. Historically some states have done a much better job of this than others. If we use federal tax dollars to pay for reforms, we have a vested interest in their being successful. That being said, the Race to the Top money did not spur on innovation as much as it rewarded certain ideaologies, such as increasing the number of charter schools. This question has much more nuance than yes or no.
No Do you support reducing restrictions on offshore energy production?
Yes Do you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
There is nothing as important as protecting our natural world for future generations. Nothing. The reality of time delays from action to result has made it harder for people to accept the reality of human caused climate change. Unfortunately, by the time the evidence is apparent to all it will be too late to address it.
Yes Do you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
There is no need for citizens to possess certain fire-arms, such as the semi-automatics used in mass shootings. We do not need to confuse the right to have guns for sport and self-defense with the means to kill many people at once.
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
Yes Should individuals be required to purchase health insurance, as mandated in the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
Unless we instate another way to assure all Americans of the right and access to affordable, decent healthcare, I support the first legislation attempting to do so. As a health care provider, I have seen too many people who wanted the ability to buy insurance and were not able to because of pre-existing conditions. We must find a way to get all Americans health care!
Yes Do you support allowing illegal immigrants, who were brought to the United States as minors, to pursue citizenship without returning to their country of origin?
No Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration law by state and local police?
No Do you support requiring illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
I believe in the DREAM Act, whereby children who have grown up in the US may apply for citizenship after meeting certain conditions. It also sounds so reasonable to ask undocumented people to return home to "get in line." Unfortunately, for many of those people there is no line to get into. Low income, low skilled workers are not on anyone's priority list. We also have a long history of including certain groups of people over other groups. Immigration has only made us better as a nation, and immigrants have often shown us the best of America.
Yes Do you support same-sex marriage?
All Americans should enjoy the same benefits and civil liberties.
Should the U.S use military force in order to prevent Iran from possessing a nuclear weapon?
Unknown Position Do you support targeting suspected terrorists outside of official theaters of conflict?
I don't know.
No Do you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?
Social Security is strong because all Americans participate in it. Social Security reduces the level of poverty for seniors drastically and should be preserved.

We need to understand that our security needs are not only met by defense but by having a solid economy and an investment in the common good.
We need to increase the tax rates for high income earners to previous levels if we are going to balance our budget.
My top priorities are getting Americans back to work by building a green economy, by using innovation and creativity towards once again focusing on the common good. I want an America where it is truly the land of opportunity for ALL Americans and a place where no-one is left behind.
